Denim & Pearl | Women of Intention
We are very excited to support the Pearl Society’s first ever Women of Intention Awards as the Gold Sponsor. At English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care, our care philosophy focuses on the social, emotional and spiritual wellness of each of our Residents and Clients, while empowering them to live meaningful lives on their aging journey. Similarly, The Pearl Society is dedicated to educating and connecting with the community while empowering those around them in a meaningful way.
Marlee Matlin is the first host of the Women of Intention Awards. Marlee won an Oscar for Best Actress at the age of 21 for her role in Children of a Lesser God. Among Marlee’s long list of accomplishments in acting are some other notable roles in The West Wing, Desperate Housewives, The L Word, Dancing with the Stars, and Celebrity Apprentice.
Marlee is also a devoted social activist. Causes Marlee works for include LGBT rights and is an advocate for children and those struggling with domestic abuse and addiction. Marlee created the “Marlee Keyboard” with MEDL mobile, the first celebrity-driven app that teaches American Sign Language. She also serves as the spokesperson for the American Red Cross and the National Association for the Deaf. Matlin herself lost her hearing at only 18 months old.
Q&A with Alyssa Huck, Minneapolis Jewish Federation, Women’s Philanthropy Associate
ERS: Can you please share a brief overview of what the Pearl Society is and what sort of things are done for your community by the society? What does the Pearl Society Aim to teach?
AH: The Pearl Society is aimed at engaging and educating donors and prospective donors to the Minneapolis Jewish Federation who have the capacity to give $365/year or more. Pearl Society members have the opportunity to purchase a necklace to symbolize their commitment to the community and to inspire others. But it takes more than a “society” and/or a piece of jewelry to engage women. So WOMEN OF INTENTION is a strategy to bring the Pearl Society to life through the Women of Intention House Parties and the Women of Intention Awards given to both local and national personalities. Women of Intention provides the vehicle for women of all ages to be engaged by inspiring their friends and by working as part of the committees for the event on April 14th.
ERS: Please tell us a little bit about the Denim & Pearl event.
AH: The first annual WOMEN OF INTENTION AWARDS, hosted by the Pearl Society will take place on April 14, 2016 beginning at 7:30 pm. Hip and fun, educational and inspirational, the event will feature a “jeans and pearls” atmosphere and be highlighted by our keynote and first-ever Woman of Intention, Marlee Matlin. In addition we’ll recognize local WOI in a variety of categories. At this time, the hope is that this event will become an annual event and one of the community favorites!
ERS: Where do you see the future of the Pearl Society?
AH: We want to grow this society into more educational programs throughout the year, expand our Women of Intention event, and reach more and more women each year. We want to be able to connect with women to help them engage in a meaningful way and bring them together because they have one very important thing in common…COMMUNITY.
