Aromatherapy at English Rose Suites
Person-Centered Care which embodies holistic approach are deeply rooted in the mission and vision of English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care. It is so important to guide and support our Residents and clients on their journey.
Aromatherapy has been part of English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care for almost 20 years. Jayne Clairmont, Owner and CEO of English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care, observed in the 1990’s at conferences throughout the country a new approach using essential oils. Later with direction from a contact made during a University of Minnesota conference, Clairmont met a knowledgeable resource distributing essential oils. A collaboration ensued to come up with a group of essential oils that would be beneficial for not only for the aging population, but also for those living with memory loss.
Since joining English Rose Suites and b♦ home Home Care in 2003, Katie Rinehimer, Quality of Life Director, has led the Aromatherapy program. Rinehimer has gained a great deal of knowledge through the years and even collaborated with HealthPartners on the Essential Oil study.
Essential Oils & Use
English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care has five main essential oils and blends that are used on a daily basis.
- Lavender: eases stress, anxiety, and sleeplessness
- Lemon: uplifting to the spirit, helps increase hunger sensations and aids in digestion
- Strength: used for pain relief
- Calming: to help ease tension, grounding, soothing overactive minds
- Anxiety Rescue: does exactly that, helps settle anxiety
Other essential oils may also be used depending on resident needs.
Lavender is diffused throughout the home in the evening to help promote a quality sleep as well used topically with a carrier such as lotion for hand massages or in water for foot soaks in the evening.
Lemon essential oil is diffused in the main living areas prior to meal time to help increase hunger sensations and aid in digestion.
Lemon is used on wash clothes for each resident to wash hands before eating and the lemon again helps increase appetite.
Strength, Calming and Anxiety Rescue are blends of oils that together aid in strength, peace and calming, and anxiety. These blends can be diffused but also like the other oils can be used topically with a carrier such as almond oil or lotion.
The benefits of essential oils will depend on when and how the oil is used or applied.
“Usually within 20 minutes of applying the oil or breathing them in from the diffuser, one will see the benefits. For some oils that are used for anxiety, it really depends on when the oil is applied. If it is being applied too late into an anxious moment, it will take much longer to see any effects,” said Rinehimer.
Each Resident at English Rose Suites is provided a carefully crafted personal aromatherapy plan based on input from the entire care team. Upon moving in, Residents are started on an initial aromatherapy plan with oils that help ease anxiety and promote, quality sleep.
“We trial the first initial plan and then as we begin to learn more about the Resident, we change and adjust the oils to fit their needs. I am considered the most knowledgeable regarding the oils and how they are best used, but it is a team effort when creating the aromatherapy plan,” said Katie Rinehimer, Quality of Life Director.
Families, Caregivers and the Nursing team are also consulted and come together to create the plan.
“We involve everyone so we can be sure to have a very clear picture of each individual Resident’s needs,” added Rinehimer.
Families are always very receptive regarding the use of essential oils and supportive of a more holistic approach. They love the idea of doing something that is natural to help support their loved one.
“Our families really like that the use of essential oils is something that we do daily and have built into the Residents care plans. It is part of the normal day to day life at English Rose Suites,” said Rinehimer.
How to Get Started using Essential Oils
Do your research and choose an oil company that you can trust. Today, you can buy essential oils just about anywhere and it’s important to be careful to ensure that you are getting a good product.
“The FDA does not regulate essential oil companies so they can tell you just about anything to get you to buy their oils. If a company tells you that their essential oils are graded, that is not true. Again, there is no one from the government who is monitoring or regulating a grading process for essential oils. If a company tells you that their oils are pharmaceutical grade, again that is not true,” said Rinehimer.
Larger MLM companies are a good place to start when first diving into essential oils. As you become more familiar and comfortable with the use of essential oils you can then branch out from there and find a company that you trust to supply your oils.
If you are looking to dive into essentials oils during this somewhat stressful, unfamiliar time, start with something that is going to bring you peace and comfort. This will be different for everyone but a good place to start is lavender, calming or anxiety rescue blend.
