This week our featured Leadership team member is Niki Ballingrud, our new Director of Health Services!
Can your please tell us a little bit about your journey to English Rose Suites & bhome Home Care?
I started my nursing career in 2010 in a residential assisted living home specializing in end of life care and hospice. I spent five years working there. I spent five months working for a large, national assisted living corporation prior to coming to English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care. English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care feels like home to me. It’s the perfect environment for the type of nursing care I want to provide for older adults.
How would you describe your leadership style?
I try to lead by example. I’ll never ask a co-worker to do something I wouldn’t do myself. I also think it’s important to work alongside with the caregivers to get a greater understanding and feel for what they are asked to do on a day to day basis. I want to be, and hope I am, the type of leader where my co-workers know I care about them as individuals as well as care about how they do their jobs.
What are some of your hobbies outside of work?
I enjoy “All Things Sports.” My favorite sports to watch are baseball and college basketball. I love the MN Twins and have a goal of going to all the American League baseball stadiums with my Dad. I love to read, knit, and travel (my suitcase is always ready to go anywhere!). I also love spending time with my three nephews.
What do you think makes us so different from other companies?
What sets English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care apart from other companies is the attention to detail for each individual resident or client. It is obvious from the caregivers in the homes to the Leadership team, that everyone wants what is best for each resident/client. Everyone who works for English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care will do whatever it takes to ensure the safety, comfort and support of all our residents/clients.
What brings you the greatest joy from your work?
I feel the greatest joy in my job when I see residents, clients and family members at ease in my care. It’s important for me to gain the trust and confidence of both the residents, clients and their family members. When I feel I have achieved that, I feel like I’m doing my job to the best of my ability.
What is your favorite memory of caring for a client/resident?
I had a Home Care client whom I had many conversations with prior to making the difficult decision to go into Hospice Care. I was honored when she told me she wanted me to be the Nurse with her when she passed. Both of us knew we couldn’t predict that would happen but it gave her a sense of peace knowing I would be with her on her journey. I was the Nurse with her the evening she passed. Her family surrounded her singing Amazing Grace as she passed away that night in her home. It was a beautiful experience and I’ve learned it is an honor to care for people at the end of their life. I feel lucky to have been a part of her journey and to be able to provide the peace and comfort she needed at that time in her life.
What advice would you give someone just starting out in this field?
Everyone has a story and everyone’s story is worth listening to. I firmly believe that you learn something to help you grow as a human being as well as a caregiver the more stories you listen to along the way.
Do you have a personal story to share about someone who has impacted the way you do your job?
The mother of one of my students told me once that you can always find a silver lining no matter what the situation may be. She herself had lost her father at a very young age and then had a daughter with significant cognitive disabilities. I’ve always admired how she can find a reason to be thankful in any given situation no matter how difficult that situation may be. She understands how short life can be so she says it easier to smile and laugh than be upset and scowl. She is a wonderful example of how to live life.
What are you most excited about for this upcoming year?
- Personal: trip to France and Spain with my mom in May.
- Professional: To be a part of English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care and help it grow and prosper.
What do you see for the future of English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care?
I think the future is bold and bright! We have excellent caregivers and an amazing Leadership team who are ready to take English Rose Suites and bhome Home Care to the next level to support and provide the best care to our current and future residents and clients.
Nike fit right in with our team; she is an excellent Nurse and we are very excited to have her on our team!
