The Power of a Smile
A simple reminder to smile is sometimes all it takes to recharge passion, drive, love, attitude, motivation, or desire. Sometimes it’s easy to get stuck in a rut, especially in the winter when it’s cold out and the winter blues may be more present. Caregiving is not always easy and as a Caregiver, it sometimes can be hard to realize the true impact you make each day. English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care strives for our caregivers to feel empowered in the work they do each and every day.
If you walk into an English Rose Suites home lately, you probably will see a smiley face or two throughout the house. The “Smile Campaign” was created to encourage staff and remind us all the importance of smiling. Sometimes all it takes is a simple reminder to recharge.
“An integral component of our dementia training curriculum is the importance of positive communication, both verbally and non-verbally, with our Residents and Clients. With the increased awareness surrounding the importance of positivity and sharing smiles with our Residents, you can feel the positive energy in our homes and clients’ homes,” said Zach Parlier, Employee Relations and Knowledge Coordinator.
During initial dementia training at English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care, employees are taught three steps to ensure a positive interaction.
- Get down to eye level
- Make eye contact
By following those three simple steps, it encourages a positive interaction by demonstrating naturally that you are here, you are happy to be here, and you are their friend. The Smile Campaign promotes those three basic principles throughout the day.
The smiles don’t need to stop with just the Residents. A visitor can see the smiley face and it can initiate conversation, or a friendly reminder for coworkers to be personable and in relationship amongst each other.
A smile is worth a thousand words. The world can always use more positivity and the power of a smile begins here at English Rose Suites and b♦home Home Care.
